Volunteer at Room at the Inn

"What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?" ~ George Eliot

Betty Allen and Sr. JoannWe are so grateful you are considering sharing your talents with the homeless of St. Louis County! We can use your help! Our volunteers always feel appreciated, and you can get real satisfaction from knowing you’ve helped someone who needs it. Many of our volunteers report that spending time with our clients opens their eyes to misconceptions about the homeless.

Betty Allen (pictured right with Sr. Joann) received the St. Louis Rams Quarterback award for her volunteer work at Room at the Inn.

Night Sites

Our greatest volunteer need is additional night sites. Your congregation would host up to ten neighbors one night a month, providing transportation, food and shelter.

To find out more, please contact our volunteer coordinator at 314/209-9198 or by email at   volunteercoordinator@divineprovidencesisters.org.

Individual Volunteers

We welcome volunteers of all ages, with all kinds of talents. We are happy to work with high school students who need to fulfill a community service requirement.

You would be a special blessing if you can spend the night as an overnight host with our guests. There are a few evenings each month for which we do not have a congregational host site. On those nights, the clients stay at the shelter in Bridgeton. Please consider staying with them as host. (Details are available in the Volunteer Job Descriptions which can be downloaded on the bottom of this page.)

Please contact our volunteer coordinator to find out more and to match your skills and time availability to the shelter’s needs.

To help the homeless, you could …

  • Join one of our committees: Breakfast with the INN Crowd, Advancement, Volunteer, Finance or Program.
  • Become a night site volunteer.
  • Become a recreational activity coordinator.
  • Assist with the children.
  • Provide clerical or data entry assistance.
  • Clean rooms, toys and/or sort donations.
  • Provide personal budgeting assistance to clients.
  • Teach internet classes to clients.

Nicole and ClientNicole is a student at Indiana University, studying psychology. She spent approximately six weeks of her summer vacation last year volunteering at Room at the Inn as part of her experiential training. She stayed with the clients at night sites and helped with programs and paperwork, but what she enjoyed most was her interaction with the children. They loved her right back!
