Some Frequently Asked Questions

About Room at the Inn

Read our frequently asked questions below. If you have more questions, please contact Room at the Inn at (314)-209-9181.

  • How do clients find us?

Potential clients are referred to us through the St. Louis County homeless hotline, which can be reached at 211, (866) 802-7155, or (314) 802-5444

  • Who comes to Room?

    • The single mom or dad who gets up early and works hard at a daycare center or a big box store, but who’s paycheck can’t stretch far enough to cover the food, rent and utilities every month on top of their child’s monthly prescription costs.
    • The family with 6 beautiful kids who paid their rent on time each month, but their landlord failed to pay the mortgage on the building. We remember all too well the exhausted young mother with all six kids in tow who were given less than a week to vacate their home, even though this hard-working mom had never missed a rent payment.
    • Families living paycheck to paycheck, for whom an unexpected medical or repair bill cost them their house.
    • The two-parent family who both work full-time at low-paying jobs with no benefits. When the dad suffered a back injury and couldn’t work, the family wound up at Room at the Inn.
    • Mothers striving to escape dangerous living conditions and provide a better future for their children. One recent client was terrified to leave her husband – and terrified to stay. She found the courage to remove her three children and herself from the constant anger, violence, and fear. She came to ROOM to give herself and her kids a chance at a better life.
    • Moms, dads, and families who’ve exhausted every other option. Many of our clients have already stayed with family, friends, in their cars, and any other place they could find. They come to ROOM as a last resort – and we are here to welcome them at our door.
  • How big of a problem is homelessness in St. Louis County?

Many people are surprised to learn that homelessness is indeed an issue in the St. Louis County community. The homeless hotline receives thousands of calls annually. Over 200 of these people gain shelter at Room at the Inn each year.

  • Do people in need just show up at your door?

No. Anyone needing shelter must be referred to ROOM through the St. Louis Homeless hotline. It requires one quick call to the hotline, who then contacts us.

  • What should I tell someone who is in need of a place to stay immediately?

Please tell them to call the St. Louis Homeless hotline at 211, (866) 802-7155, or (314) 802-5444.  It’s a simple process – they just need to make the call.

  • Can the children who stay with you still go to school?

Yes. School-age children are enrolled in Pattonville schools (unless they are already attending school elsewhere) -- and receive transportation to and from their school. Pre-school-age children receive care and do preschool activities here at the shelter.

  • If a parent is homeless but is employed, can they still stay at Room?

Yes, absolutely. Employment is key to creating stability for the families. We support working parents in every way possible – we will help arrange transportation, childcare, and provide clothing, food, medicine, and health care referrals.

  • Do you drug test your residents?

It is not standard policy, but we will drug test if there is evidence of substance misuse.

  • Will you house children who don’t have a parent with them at Room?

We cannot house children without a parent or relative living with them.

  • Is your location confidential?

No. We are located at 3415 Bridgeland Drive, Bridgeton, MO 63044.

  • A group of people at my workplace want to help Room at the Inn. How can we help, and whom should we talk to?

That is wonderful – and we thank you! You can support our clients in building a better future for their families in many ways. Please contact Cindy Warren, a volunteer coordinator, at 314 209-9181 or cwarren@roomstl.org. Cindy will help get your group involved – and again, thank you! We literally would not be here without our amazing volunteers and supporters.
