A Message from our Executive Director

Spring is a time of renewal, and Room at the Inn is experiencing the same growth and excitement the earth provides at this time of year. Our renovated space in Bridgeton has provided our client families and our staff with many additional opportunities for support. Our priority is helping our clients find housing, which can be a challenge because of affordability. Thankfully, we provide respite and support that will engage our clients in employment, health care, education, and housing.
Our renovated spaces allow us to engage with our families in different ways, through partnerships with community organizations. We are looking to expand our relationship with
Operation Food Search
to include a produce truck as well as nutritional training. We are engaged with
Thrivent Financial
for monthly financial literacy classes. We have already held two classes, one each in January and February.
Clayco
Information Technology
presented to clients and staff in February on how to use Artificial Intelligence for good. As mental health is an important part of healing and success for our families, we are in conversation with
Avenues Counseling
to bring in-person services to our Counseling Suite. And
CNB STL
plans to assist with predatory lending training for our families.
We provide a village of support for our clients through these partnerships and collaborations. The Room staff are consistently present for our families and are constantly expanding our network. The simple things—a warm bed, a clean bathroom, a prepared meal, a large laundry room—make the other supportive services less daunting for our clients to access.
We are humbled by the support of our community of volunteers and donors, and grateful for the work of our partners.
With sincere gratitude,
|
Laurie Phillips
Executive Director

Client Tales: A Family's Story
|
|
|
Janice and her family, a husband and a school-aged child, came to Room at the Inn when they became unhoused. Janice’s daughter continued in school and received tutoring from Room volunteers. Janice continued working full-time while her husband looked for employment.
One day, Janice left for work and did not return for two days. Her family had not heard from her. When she returned to Room, Janice shared that she has a substance use disorder and did not return because she was using again. No Call, No Show at the shelter is usually an automatic termination.
Because of Janice’s honesty, and the stability her family was realizing, Room staff offered the Alternatives to Termination program (ATT). This program allows clients who would be terminated for cause to extend their stay if they agree to access additional help. Room Program staff searched for a sober-living community that would welcome Janice’s entire family, as they want and need to stay together. Unfortunately, that support does not exist in our community.
As an alternative, Janice accepted a part-time job with Room to help keep the building clean, as she lost her job the weekend she returned to using. Janice and her family continue to move forward, save for their own housing, and receive strategic, individualized case management and access to substance use disorder services from partner agencies and outside mental health counseling.

Meet Our Newest Board Chair!
|
John Herrin, Vice President of the Industrial Group at Keeley Construction, was introduced to Room at the Inn through the Keeley Cares Foundation in 2021.
Right away, the mission of Room at the Inn resonated with him. While living in Augusta, GA, John’s family participated as a host family with a church for a similarly modeled organization, so the mission of Room at the Inn felt especially meaningful.
By 2022, John joined the Board of Directors and now serves as Chairman.
We at Room at the Inn are honored to have John serving as Chairman and can’t wait to see all that we accomplish together!

Volunteer Highlight: Sharon Carver
|
Sharon Carver has been volunteering since 2024, and i
n that short time, has made a major impact through her dedication, passion, and love for our mission.
Some of her highlights as a volunteer include hosting craft sessions that were enjoyed by both adults and children, labeling and organizing all the supplies for our newly renovated kitchen, and maintaining the pantry of donated items on a weekly basis.
She has even brought her 13-year-old grandson to help out at Room at the Inn!
"I’m happy I have time and talents I can share with Room at the Inn clients as they navigate their challenges...Room at the Inn is an organization comprised of wonderfully dedicated staff and volunteers who sincerely care about improving the lives of each client they serve. There’s a variety of opportunities in which you can help!"

Help Support our Clients!
|
Every day, we work tirelessly to help our clients find solutions to their homelessness, including providing them with tools they need to find employment.
Some of the most important tools they can use are gift cards and cash, which help provide daycare for children, allow our clients access to new clothes, money for gas or transportation, and create an overall stronger foundation for success. However, we have recently run low on these resources and need more.
Here is how you can help:
By giving a direct cash donation or gift cards to Room at the Inn, you are playing a vital role in transforming the lives of our clients! Also, for any cash donation, there is a MO Tax Credit that can be found
here
.
If you are interested in supporting, you can drop your donation off at our office (
3415 Bridgeland Dr., Bridgeton, MO 63044
) or by calling us at
314-209-9181
to arrange another method.
